Healthy BBQ Recipe: BBQ in a Bowl
BBQ in a Bowl
You are going to LOVE this BBQ in a Bowl! It's simple and easy, delicous, and makes a fantastic meal prep recipe for future lunches and dinners. Plus, it's kid friendly (so you know it's good)!
Ingredients
- 1 Serving Nutrifitx BBQ Beans
- 1/2 Serving Nutrifitx Coleslaw
- 4 oz Lean Ground Turkey
- 1/2 to 1 Tbsp Nutrifitx BBQ Seasoning
Instructions
- Heat a small amount of olive oil over medium heat. Once heated, add lean ground turkey. Stir periodically until cooked through. Once cooked, add Nutrifitx BBQ Seasoning. Stir until well combined. Once cooked and seasoned, cover and set aside (keep warm if done before the rest of the meal).
- While turkey is cooking, start your BBQ Beans. Follow instructions in Nutrifitx BBQ Beans recipe. Allow to simmer on low for the remainder of your cooking time, stirring periodically to prevent sticking.
- Prepare the Nutrifitx Coleslaw according to recipe directions. Chill until serving.
- To assemble your bowl: add your beans, then your ground turkey, and add your coleslaw on top. (We like to use about 1/2 serving of coleslaw with this recipe.)
Notes
You can also use chicken cutlets with this recipe in place of ground turkey. Cut cleaned chicken breast into bite sized pieces. Add raw chicken to bowl, and season with Nutrifitx BBQ Seasoning. Stir until fully covered in seasoning. Add to skillet with heated olive oil, stirring until cooked through. If you want your chicken to brown, leave space in the pan and allow chicken to sit on each side for 2-4 minutes before stirring or flipping.

BBQ Beans
These BBQ Beans are a healthier version of baked beans. They're quick and easy, and they use clean ingredients. Enjoy in moderation, as these are a bit higher in sugar than many of our recipes - but they're both healthy and delicious in mindful serving sizes.
Ingredients
- 1 can Great Northern Beans or White Beans of Choice (check ingredient labels for toxins)
- 1/2 Red Onion, diced
- 2 Tbsp Organic Tomato Paste
- 1/2 Tbsp Mustard Powder
- 2 Tbsp Maple Syrup
- 1 Tbsp Brown Sugar
- 2 Tbsp Garlic, minced
- 1 Tbsp Organic Paprika (Or organic smoked paprika for a smokey flavor - this is what we do!)
- 1 Tbsp Organic Chili Powder
- 1 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
- Sea Salt or Pink Himalayan Salt, to taste
Instructions
- Drain and rinse your beans, and add to a large skillet. Turn heat to medium.
- Add all ingredients to the pan, and begin stirring. Be sure to use gentle motions, as you don't want to end up with BBQ bean "mush."
- Turn heat to low (or simmer) and allow all ingredients to simmer together for about 10 minutes, or until your desired flavor is reached. The beans should thicken a bit and flavors should be well blended.

Keep in mind that this will neary double the nutrition facts per serving. Be mindful of how large your portions are when serving if you coose to add dressing to the coleslaw.

Gut Healthy Mayo
This gut healthy mayo recipe is made with anti-inflammatory ingredients that won't throw off the gut microbiome. Plus, there are no toxic ingredients, no fillers or additives, and no preservatives. It's quick and easy to make, and lasts for 2-3 weeks.
Ingredients
- 1 Whole Egg
- 1 Egg Yolk
- 1 tsp Sea Salt or Pink Himalayan Salt
- 1/2 tsp Mustard Powder
- 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice
- 1 c Olive Oil (See notes for flavor details)
Instructions
- Add egg and egg yolk to a blender, and blend on a high speed until well combined.
- Add salt, mustard powder, and lemon juice, and blend on high speed until well combined. (Do not omit mustard powder, as it is not for flavor, but the composition of the mayonnaise.)
- *READ CAREFULLY: Turn on your blender again. While the blender is on, remove the lid (or the center cap of the lid), and SLOWLY add in your oil. We like to use a liquid measuring up with a spout to pour a very thin stream. The slower you go on this step, the better and thicker your mayo will turn out. If you pour the olive oil in too fast, it will not emulsify - you will be left with an oily mess that isn't easy to fix or good to consume. As you pour, the mayo will get thicker and thicker. If you notice that the oil is separating from the egg mixture, stop pouring and let the blender mix for a bit before continuing.
- Transfer mayo to storage container (preferrably glass), and store in refrigerator.
Notes
The olive oil you use in this recipe can really impact the flavor of your mayonnaise. We prefer to use 3/4 cup of light tasting olive oil + 1/4 of full flavor (robust) olive oil; or we like to use 1 cup of classic/mild olive oil.
We find using all light tasting oil gives the mayo a bland or oily flavor, while the robust or full flavor olive oil is far too flavorful for our taste. Choose your ratio according to your taste preference.
IF YOUR MAYO SEPARATES OR DOES NOT EMULSIFY: This isn't the easiest problem to fix; however, it can be done.
Option 1: First, try adding additional egg yolks one at a time, blending between each to ensure the mayo is repaired. This can act as an emulsifier to help blend the oil and egg mixture together. Only add 2-3 egg yolks. If the mayo is still super oily and separated, try the next option.
Option 2: If adding egg yolks does not help to emulsify your mayo, remove the oily mixture from the blender. You'll need to start over from the top of the recipe and repeat. When it's time to pour in your oil, use the oily mixture you have from the previous batch instead of fresh oil. You will not need all of the damaged mayonnaise, so be sure to go slow and pay close attention to the consistency of your new mayo. You can keep the oily, damaged mayo in the fridge for your next batch or two.
